Picture

untitled (fragments), 55 x 55 inch, oil on canvas, 2019

Featured in the Middle Child exhibition (2019) at the Women's Art Association of Canada, Untitled (Fragments) is a family portrait that used a photo reference from my first trip to visit my family in Greece in 2004. Parts of the work such as the objects, prepared food, pattern of the table cloth, members of my family are detailed and filled in while the remainder shows the bare canvas that is sketched in reveals or the underpainting of the work.

The warm red, beige and purple tones are heavily saturated reconnects a warm and inviting feeling of nostalgia. The empty and un-filled spaces commemorate the disconnect and loss of those family members that are not in my life anymore. This painting permeates fragments of a memory that seems both familiar yet estranged all at once.
